The outpourings of Vesuvius were both airborne in the form of ash and pumice, and denser volcanic debris from pyroclastic flows and lava.  The fallout of ash and pumice, to the south and southwest of Vesuvius, covered the towns of Boscoreale, Oplontis, Pompeii and Stabiae.  The areas affected by pyroclastic flows and lava (shown in brown) are mainly to the west of Vesuvius, but as can be seen some areas to the north and around Boscoreale were also affected.
